High school prom is often idolized as a night of glitz and glamour, but this story isn’t about decorations, the venue or even the attire.

Senior quarterback Kaleb Johnston wears many hats at Hale County High School, including a helmet and a crown.

Paul Tinker and Kaleb have been friends since fifth grade.

“I won prom prince last year, so I figured I’d run for king,” he said. “And when I heard that Paul could go to prom, they’d taken the sign-up sheets and he didn’t have time to sign up. So, I told my mom one night, if I win it, I’m going to give it to Paul.”

When Kaleb was announced as Prom King 2016, it was a win for them both.

“I was surprised,” Paul said. “I was shocked because I didn’t know that he was going to give me the crown. I didn’t know that I was going to have the crown. I was kind of nervous at first. Yeah, I was a special moment.”

It was a special moment and a testament of friendship that neither Paul nor Kaleb will ever forget.

“I would like to say thank you to all my friends,” Paul said. “I would like to thank all of my teachers for making my special day so happy and I will never forget this special moment.”
