TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – Workers have broken ground for a new YMCA in downtown Tuscaloosa.

The facility on 12th Street will be across the street from the downtown Post Office.

The new YMCA is expected to open by late spring or early summer in 2016.

YMCA CEO Walt Larisey says the city has outgrown its current facility.

Officials said the new building will be constructed in phases.

They say the first phase will feature a 16,000- to 17,000-square-foot building. An outdoor walking track, a public playground and a green space in the center that can be used for games, reunions and other activities will also be included.

There is no reported timetable yet for future phases, which will include a pool and basketball court.
