GOING ON VACATION? SOME TIPS TO KEEP YOU SAFE FROM BREAK-INS

It’s vacation season, but when you’re getting away from it all, your home might be a tempting target for thieves.

Sgt. Alex Miles with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Department said there’s several things to keep in mind before your trip and while you’re gone, including:

  • Don’t post on social media that you won’t be or are not home.
  • Put your belongings in a secure place.
  • Have a neighbor or friend watch after your house.
  • Make sure all the serial numbers on expensive household gadgets like TVs or computers are recorded and stored in a secure location.

If you’re still worried, Miles said your local law enforcers are happy to help.

“You can call dispatch and have an extra patrol placed on your residence,” he said. “Let them know you’re going to be out of town on vacation, and we can have a deputy ride by your house and help you keep an eye on your place.”

And if you get home and feel something’s not quite right or believe your home may have been the site of a break-in, Miles suggested call the police, and they’ll come do a walk-through of your home.
