Gerald Allen challenger dropped from GOP primary over Maddox donation

Alabama Senate District 21 candidate Tripp Powell’s name was removed from the GOP ballot ahead of the May 24 primary election. He was running in the primary opposite incumbent Gerald Allen.
Powell is among four Republican candidates removed from the primary ballot over the weekend. All are accused of supporting Democratic candidates, which is a violation of the party’s rules.
Powell spoke with WVUA 23 Sunday and confirmed the GOP’s move, saying someone filed a complaint against him for donating $500 to Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox’s 2018 gubernatorial campaign.
Maddox ran as a Democrat and lost to Gov. Kay Ivey.
Allen is the lone remaining Republican on the ballot, meaning he’ll face off for his seat against Democrat Lisa Ward in November.
Powell said he’s considering his options, and may run as an independent candidate.
