In Alabama, football can get pretty sentimental, but this year the Crimson Tide is missing one of its biggest fans after Tuscaloosa native Zach Koch died in a wreck earlier this year.

Without Zach here to celebrate the season, his friends are remembering him with their own special event: The Zach Koch Tribute Tailgate.

The event, happening Saturday from 2-8 p.m. at Rhythm and Brews in downtown Tuscaloosa, features live music thanks to the Carson Carlisle Band, food and drinks, a raffle and a silent auction. Zach was something of an artist, his friends and family said, and the event’s commemorative T-shirts feature images of some of his work.

The best part, organizers said, is that all proceeds go to the Zach Koch Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is awarded to students who share his love and passion for creative design.

Friend Dustin Savage said there’s no doubt Zach will be smiling down on the tailgate event.

“He would absolutely love it,” he said. “He was one that everyone loved. There’s not that many people who you go out there and everyone is best friends with them. Just the best of the best, honestly.”

Some items up for auction include Crimson Tide memorabilia autographed by head football coach Nick Saban, Dierks Bentley concert tickets, tableware, jewelry and outdoor supplies.
