FORMER PICKENS COUNTY SHERIFF SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON

Sheriff Abston

Story by WVUA 23’s Lacey Beasley.

Former Pickens County Sheriff David Abston was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison on Monday.

Abston scammed the West Alabama Food Bank and Highland Baptist Church of Gordo by pocketing leftover money meant for feeding inmates. He pleaded guilty in July to one count of wire fraud and one count of filing a false tax return.

Abston asked the judge to give him home confinement and community service instead of jail time. However, the judge was not swayed. The 68-year-old will pay restitution of $51,285 in 90 days.

The West Alabama Food Bank gave a statement in response to Abston apologizing in court today.

The statement read: “The West Alabama Food Bank respectfully accepts former Pickens County Sheriff David Abston’s apology. We sincerely hope that we can all move forward to serve the citizens of Pickens County and all of West Alabama.”

Abston was sheriff of Pickens County for 32 years.
