FIRST PRESBYTERIAN DEBUTING NEW ORGAN SUNDAY

Organist Jeff Binford plays the new organ at First Presbyterian in Tuscaloosa Jan. 29, 2016.
TUSCALOOSA – Organs have existed for centuries, but now First Presbyterian Church in Tuscaloosa can say it’s got one of the latest and greatest.
The organ was built by Orgues Létourneau in Quebec, and First Presbyterian organist Jeff Binford says the new one provides a fresher “American classic” sound than the church’s previous organ.
“The sound is very orchestral,” he says. “But it also plays 18th-century music well, it plays 19th-century music well, and especially because this is a church, it plays worship services extremely well.”

The new organ features better volume controls, which allows for rich sound that’s not as overpowering as the old organ was, he says.
They’re still in the process of fine-tuning the instrument, he says, but everything will be ready for its official debut at Sunday’s church service.
