The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released crime statistics from 2014. From 2013 to 2014, the city of Tuscaloosa saw a 7% increase in violent crimes and 8% decrease in the number or property crimes. Tuscaloosa Police Chief, Steve Anderson says the 7% increase in violent crimes sounds worse than it is.
There were only around 30 more violent crimes committed in the city during 2014 than 2013.
Anderson attributes decreased crime numbers to advancements in technology such as surveillance video and the use of bait vehicles and houses.
He says the numbers vary from year. Sometimes they increase and others they decrease, but his force is and will continue to do everything they can to reduce crime in Tuscaloosa.

There are currently 282 police officers working for Tuscaloosa Police Separtment.
