ETOWAH COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY LOSES BATTLE WITH CANCER

GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) – Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp has died.

The 49-year-old Harp was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and has been in worsening health in recent months.

Harp died Wednesday afternoon. Sheriff Todd Entrekin says Harp will be missed greatly.

Harp was first elected chief prosecutor in the northeast Alabama county in 2004. He was re-elected to a second six-year term and had already announced plans to seek another term.

Earlier this year Harp served as the lead prosecutor in the capital murder trial of a woman accused in the running death of her 9-year-old granddaughter. Joyce Hardin Garrard was convicted and is now serving life without parole.

Harp is survived by his wife Cassie and four children.
