Alabama students who are enrolled in the National School Lunch Program are getting help participating in today’s online-heavy learning environment via vouchers for high-speed internet access.

Alabama Broadband Connectivity for Students is providing free internet vouchers to more than 20,000 public and charter school students with the help of funding from the CARES Act.

The vouchers are available on a per-household basis and cover the cost of high-speed internet access through Dec. 30.

DECA Energy Division Chief Maureen Neighbors said the program ensures students can participate in remote learning courses.

“The primary goal is to make broadband accessibility affordable to families who might struggle to pay for internet service during distant learning,” Neighbors said. “But we have secondary goals of assisting families getting started with broadband who’ve never had broadband before and introducing them to what can be available to them.”

Eligible students should expect vouchers in the mail within the next few weeks.
