Elevate Tuscaloosa Meeting

On Tuesday, Tuscaloosa city leaders opened the floor to residents’ opinions regarding Mayor Walt Maddox’s Elevate Tuscaloosa plan.

It was the first of many scheduled meetings offering residents a chance to speak up about the proposed 1-cent sales tax increase.

Residents filled City Hall for the meeting, addressing how or why they think this tax is what the city does or does not need.

“Instead of having a tax increase doing those things, I think it can continue to do (those things) with the tax income it already has,” said resident Stephen Fitts.

Local business owners who have been here for years said the plan should be voted on so everyone has a chance to have their voice heard.

The City Council will continue their meetings every week until they reach common ground. The public is invited to those meetings.
