DRIVERS BEWARE: SCHOOL BACK IN SESSION MEANS KIDS WAITING ON, GETTING OFF BUSES

The Tuscaloosa Police Departments wants to make sure all students stay safe this school year, and that means having drivers take extra care around school buses.

TPD Public Information Officer Lt. Teena Richardson said it’s illegal to drive around buses stopping to pick up or drop off children.

“Kids are not always walking on the sidewalk,” she said. “So they may be walking in the streets, they may not have a sidewalk to walk on. You need to make sure that you’re aware of that as well, and look out for them because they are not necessarily looking out for the vehicles.”

Students are walking to and from bus stops as early as 6:50 in the morning, and as late as 4 in the afternoon, Richardson said, so take extra precautions.

Richardson said she urges parents who are dropping their children off at school to leave early so speeding isn’t necessary to get there on time.
