The Dixie Youth State Baseball Tournament began on Friday, June 25, at Gordon Davis Park in Cottondale.

The tournament, which consisted of more than 20 teams between the ages of 5 and 6, played throughout the weekend to determine which two teams would participate in the championship game today, June 29.

While the tournament was canceled last year because of COVID-19, the parents, coaches and children were excited to play ball once again.

“The whole crowd cheering and kids playing takes us back to the good ole days when we were growing up,” said Cottondale Dixie Youth Baseball Board President Sean Johnson.

Kirby Michaels, tournament director, said that he hoped the tournament would continue to inspire children and help push them toward achieving greater things.

“This gives them a little fire to say, ‘When I get to be older, I want to win my district and play in a state tournament,’” he said. “I am just excited to have an open invitational that allows these kids a chance to play.”
