Day cares adapting to hot weather by cutting back on outdoor play
The sweltering Alabama heat isn’t good for anybody, let alone children. That’s what many day cares around the state are drastically cutting back on how long the children in their care play outside.
Shannon Massey from Capstone Child Development Center said these triple-digit temperatures means its too miserable for children to be outdoors.
“Some mornings if it’s still cool enough we try to go out really early, but on the days we are under a heat advisory and stuff, no,” Massey said. “We just let them play in the classrooms and give them fun activities to do.”
Massey said on days when it is possible to go outside they drink lots of water to make sure the children are well hydrated.
