CORONA-RELATED UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS OVERWHELM DEPT. OF LABOR

The Alabama Department of Labor is flooded with unemployment claims from those impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Communications Director Tara Hutchison cleared up who can file for unemployment during this pandemic.

“Anyone who is in quarantine by a medical professional, government entity and finally those who have been sent home or laid off by an employer due to COVID-19,” she said. “Those are the people who are eligible who otherwise would have not been eligible. We’ve also relaxed some of our old rules that would normally apply to unemployment compensation benefits for those who are protected by COVID-19.”

Hutchison said the quickest way for people to get their claims is through their website, labor.alabama.gov. The phone lines are being overwhelmed and may take longer.
