U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, who represents the 7th Congressional District in Alabama, is calling on Gov. Kay Ivey to expand Medicaid in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sewell said she wants free COVID-19 treatment for people who contract the virus and don’t have health insurance.

With mandatory business closures because of shelter in place orders across the state, thousands of Alabamians are suddenly facing layoffs and furloughs and no more health insurance.

Fighting and beating the virus depends on Alabama residents’ ability to get the testing and care they need, Sewell said, and people who have lost their jobs and insurance shouldn’t be forced to choose between going without or being tested, treated and stuck with astronomical medical bills.
