Former Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court Judge John H. England Jr. was honored Friday after 28 years of service.

England retired in 2021, but his going-away celebration was delayed because of COVID-19. On Friday, England said he enjoyed his time serving the county.

“Mixed emotions,” he said. “I enjoyed my time here. Like anything else, there were ups and downs and there were stressful times. But I feel like I served.”

City and county officials showed up to exhibit their appreciation of England’s long career, as did family and friends.

England’s son, Judge John England III, said that he wouldn’t be where he is today without his father’s guidance.

England said that although he is retired from the bench, he’ll continue helping the Tuscaloosa community any way he can.

“I’ll continue to do those things because that’s the best way I feel I can give back,” England said.
