CHILD IN CRITICAL CONDITION FOLLOWING SHOOTING MONDAY NIGHT
An 8-year-old boy is fighting for his life at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham after he was caught in the crossfire during a hail of bullets at a Tuscaloosa apartment complex Monday night.
Investigators said as many as 40 shots were fired around 9:20 p.m. at Crescent East Apartments in Tuscaloosa, located at 226 49th Ave E.
The sound of the shots was picked up on surveillance video more than a half-mile away.
“There were bullets flying everywhere,” said Yvonne Hines. Hines said she, her 2-year-old grandson KJ and her daughter Cindreka Hines heard the dozens of shots outside their home Monday.
“He said ‘Mommy, I’m scared,’ ” Cindreka Hines said. “I had to check his heartbeat, and it was beating really fast. It was very unsafe.”
Crescent East residents told investigators there were several people firing weapons.
“We all just ducked to the floor,” Cindreka Hines said.
Shell casing were found over a large area, Investigators said.
The child was shot while sitting in his family’s vehicle, which was driving through the area at the time of the shooting.
He remains in critical condition. No suspects have been arrested.
