Students at The Capitol School in Tuscaloosa celebrated the Lunar New Year on Monday, with activities including a parade, learning the lion dance, and enjoying several Asian-inspired snacks.
Throughout the month, students are learning about the continent of Asia, and so honoring the Lunar New Year allowed them to embrace those cultures and participate in some of the traditions.
The Capitol School Preschool Director Kathy McGuire said their goal is immersing students in other cultures as part of the learning environment.
“We learned all of the Asian animals and have spent a couple of weeks talking about Lunar New Year,” McGuire said. “The children made crafts, and it was just a lot of fun.”
For the past 14 years, the Capitol School has hosted a Lunar New Year celebration, and it’s something students look forward to every year, McGuire said.
