‘CAN MY PET GET CORONAVIRUS?’ – LOCAL VET SAYS IT’S COMPLICATED

Dr. Jimmy Canant at Fosters Veterinary Clinic has been getting the same questions a lot lately: “Can my pets get coronavirus?”

The short answer is, while some animals have contracted the virus, it’s not likely that Mittens or Fido will. But, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

“There is no evidence at this time that they readily get infected, that pets can easily get infected,” Canant said. “There is no indication that they transmit it to people at this time. Now, all of this is fluid and of course, it’s like in the human literature every day, it’s changing day to day.”

Canant said there have been some cases of different animals having COVID-19 around the world, but the only ones that have shown signs are tigers at a zoo. And while there is not much information on how the virus can be transferred from people to animals, Canant added that it might be smart to obey social distancing with furry friends as well.
