The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama is helping small businesses pay their bills during the pandemic.

The chamber’s Small Business Fund been able to help 95 local businesses — like the Tuscaloosa Flower Shoppe — so far by giving out a total of $200,000 in small grants.

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox has proposed giving $1 million from the city to the relief fund for businesses in Tuscaloosa. That’s a gesture Tuscaloosa Flower Shoppe Owner Sarah Morrison said she’s appreciating right now.

“The mayor putting money in the small business community is huge because a lot of us are affected in different ways,” she said. “Being closed is so difficult, and small businesses are the life blood of our community.”

The Tuscaloosa City council is voting on the $1 million dollar contribution May 12.
