The Alabama Department of Transportation will demolish the westbound bridge on Interstate 20/59 over McFarland Boulevard in Tuscaloosa later this week.

Eastbound traffic will end its current lane split and shift onto the two new lanes on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. Westbound traffic will split and shift onto the new bridge span on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 8 p.m.

McFarland Boulevard directly under the interstate will close in both directions on Friday, Dec. 20 at 11 p.m. until Monday, Dec. 23 at 5 p.m.

Law enforcement will be on-site to assist with traffic. Two lanes will remain open in each direction on the interstate, including entrance and exit ramps during this period. The work is part of the initiative to add lanes and a bridge replacement project from near Exit 73 to near Exit 77. It is expected to be completed by December 2020.

Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use Skyland Boulevard, Interstate 359 and other alternate routes.
