BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF DONATING BLOOD
By WVUA web writer Spencer Main
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the American Red Cross says it important to donate blood to combat the disease. According to the American Cancer Society, 1.6 million cases of cancer will be diagnosed this year.
The Red Cross collects an estimated 14,000 blood donations every day and supplies to help patients during their chemotherapy, surgery or treatment for complications.
“I was a nurse for 40 years,” nurse Mary Huppert said in a news release. “I saw blood transfusions save a lot of lives.”
Huppert received two blood transfusions last year as she was battling breast cancer.
The Tuscaloosa Association of Realtors is hosting a blood donating opportunity Oct. 31.
The Red Cross suggests downloading its Red Cross Donor App or visiting its website for more information regarding blood donation. Donors are encouraged to complete a health history questionnaire before their appointment.
