Boligee man killed in I-59 wreck in Greene County early Friday

Pedestrian Fatal Cropped

A pedestrian died early Friday in the wake of a five-vehicle crash on Interstate 59 near Knoxville in Greene County.

The crash happened just before 3:30 a.m. near the 55-mile marker, about 1 mile north of Knoxville.

Herbert J. Lewis, 60, of Boligee was fatally injured when he fell from a bridge after he was hit by the SUV he’d been driving after it was hit by a tractor-trailer and a pickup.

Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Troopers’ preliminary investigation suggests Lewis was standing on the road at the time of the crash, and there were two other vehicles involved after the initial impact.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Highway Patrol Division is investigating the cause of the crash.
