BLUES FESTIVAL ‘SHINES’ A LIGHT ON EDUCATION

Blues Festival

Reporting by WVUA 23’s Jordan Johnson

Aug. 31 was the ninth annual Johnny Shines Blues Festival. This event honors late blues singer Johnny Shines with food, vendors and performances from blues musicians from all over the state.

Eight years ago, Carroline Shines Edwards started donating all the money from ticket sales to scholarships in her father’s name.

“The legacy means a lot,” Edwards said. “A lot of people say that you leave a legacy. No – your legacy is what you do now.”

Edwards said the scholarship is an important way to keep her father’s legacy because he valued education.
