Birmingham police chief resigns, city names acting chief

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith has resigned and will be replaced by an acting chief. Mayor Randall Woodfin’s office says Smith quit to focus on personal matters.

In May, leaders of a Fraternal Order of Police lodge voted unanimously to express a lack of confidence in Smith, citing increasing crime and violence against officers.

Smith weathered that vote, but the city came close to its all-time high for homicides in 2021. Woodfin says Smith will be replaced on an acting basis by Capt. Scott Thurmond, a 23-year veteran.
