BIRMINGHAM POLICE ARREST 6 DURING PROTEST
HOMEWOOD, Ala. (AP) – Police have arrested six people who were protesting the death of a teenager in the city jail in the Birmingham suburb of Homewood.
Authorities charged the demonstrators with disorderly conduct or resisting arrest during a protest Tuesday outside the city jail in Homewood.
The demonstrators say they want answers about the death of 18-year-old Kindra Chapman.
Police say Chapman was arrested on a robbery charge on July 14. They say she was later found hanging from a bed sheet in a cell in an apparent suicide.
But relatives of the woman don’t believe she would have killed herself. Aunt Leslie Chapman says the young woman was happy and had everything to live for.
Homewood police say they’ve sent findings of their investigation to Jefferson County prosecutors.
