BIRMINGHAM OFFICER, SUSPECT WOUNDED AFTER TRAFFIC STOP

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Police in Alabama’s largest city say a sergeant and a suspect were both shot and wounded during an exchange of gunfire after a traffic stop.

Police in Birmingham told new outlets West Precinct Sgt. Anthony Wheeler was shot in the leg during a foot chase after a Wednesday afternoon traffic stop.

Authorities said both were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the officer pulled over a vehicle with three people inside, and one of them was a suspect in some area auto thefts.

Police say two people fled and gunfire was exchanged during the chase. All three were taken into custody. No charges were immediately announced.
