BIRMINGHAM MAN CHARGED IN BOYFRIEND’S BEATING DEATH

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Birmingham police say a man found dead with multiple injuries to his head and chest was murdered by his boyfriend.

Police said they responded to a call of two people fighting at an apartment Saturday on First Avenue South around 12:30 p.m.

Lt. Sean Edwards said when officers got inside the apartment they found the victim, 54-year-old Dennis Stimpson, on the bedroom floor with apparent blunt force trauma to his face, chest and head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Stimpson was a longtime physical education teacher who retired in 2015.

Edwards said police took Stimpson’s boyfriend, 27-year-old Richard Johnson, into custody.

Sgt. Bryan Shelton said Monday that Johnson is at a hospital and will be taken to jail and held without bond once he’s released.
