BIRMINGHAM MAN ARRESTED IN TUSCALOOSA KIDNAPPING
Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit’s Lt. Kip Hart says a man accused of kidnapping another on Monday has been arrested.
Deante Cooper, 24, of Birmingham was taken into custody by the United States Marshal’s Task Force in Birmingham on Tuesday.
Cooper is charged with kidnapping and burglary in the event, which started at Brookstone Apartments in Tuscaloosa.
Hart said authorities believe the kidnapping was in retaliation for a failed drug transaction in Birmingham that morning, and believe the 21-year-old victim knew at least one of his abductors through the drug trade. Acquaintances of the victim participated in an earlier failed drug deal, investigators said.
Hart said they’re still in the process of identifying the other suspects and obtaining warrants for their arrest.
The victim is still in critical condition but is expected to survive
Cooper was transported back to Tuscaloosa and placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on $120,000 in bonds.
