Bibb Co Baseball

There’s a special group of children that live in Bibb County. They’re the South Bibb All Stars, and they’re the Little League World Series champions.

A special celebration was held Friday evening at the Bibb Sportsplex to honor the team and their head coach, former Alabama star and big leaguer, Matt Downs.

“Baseball has been unbelievable to me,” Downs said. “It’s taught me a lot in life and hard lessons, to be honest with you, so to come back and to give the kids some of the stuff I’ve learned over the years and playing and coaching and just watching them develop from the things we show them day in and day out and watch them pick it up, grow from season to season, has been unbelievable.”

The celebration included the trophy presentation to each player. One of the best moments of the night was getting to talk with the champs who enjoy the game of baseball and have nicknames to prove it.

With nicknames like “Hammer Head” and “Big Barrel,” how can these guys not win? The South Bibb All Stars went 7-1 in the World Series, beating Pottsboro, Texas to win it all. The team definitely wants to thank their town of Bibb County for rallying behind them and sending them to the World Series.

“Over nine days we raised more money than we really needed, to be honest with you, because of the small-town backing the people that supported the small town businesses,” Downs said. “It’s been unbelievable to watch the support for these kids.”

After the applause and trophy presentations, and after the recognition of being world series champions, these 7-, 8- and 9-year-olds only had one thing on their minds: to have fun.

“We won it and we had seven days before school started,” Downs said. “So we tried to (have fun). Like, tonight, we have bounce houses and slides for them and we took them bowling and let them be kids now because we try to protect them all year from getting hurt during the baseball season.”

Of course the night had to also end in grand fashion: a big fireworks show lit the Bibb County sky. The town is still reeling from this major win, and Downs said he hopes this type of exposure and momentum sticks around.
