MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Gov. Robert Bentley is asking a committee to suspend an impeachment investigation until lawmakers name what they suspect he has done wrong.

The governor’s office on Thursday filed the motion to suspend proceedings with the House Judiciary Committee until the House passes a more specific statement of the charges

Twenty-three House members signed impeachment articles accusing the governor of corruption and neglect of duties,

Lawyers for the governor’s office say the articles are “impermissibly vague” and sanction an unlimited investigation. The governor’s lawyers argued that the state Constitution does not permit such an unfettered inquiry.

The articles were filed after Bentley’s former law enforcement secretary accused him of having an affair with a staffer and interfering with law enforcement business. The governor admitted inappropriate conversations but denied the other accusations.
