West Tuscaloosa residents who make use of the Benjamin Barnes YMCA are getting a brand-new location with more amenities just down the road.

On Tuesday, the Tuscaloosa City Council approved moving the branch to the McDonald Hughes Center in a 5-2 vote.

District 1 Council Member Matthew Wilson and District 3 Council Member Norman Crow voted against the motion.

The YMCA’s current location is 1.2 miles away from McDonald Hughes, and it’s located in District 1 while the community center is in District 2.

“I think it is going to mean everything, because now we are talking about doing things that (the area has) not had before,” said YMCA of Tuscaloosa CEO Jeff Knox. “Including expanded facilities, field space and programs we had not been able to do before due to limited field space.”
