A 16-year-old boy is facing murder charges after a 22-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in Tuscaloosa.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit said this afternoon they are charging Deramus Devalle Harris with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder in relation to the shooting death of Darrieon Dees.

Witnesses told authorities Harris and Dees were driving down Fosters Ferry Road when they encountered three other teens walking along the road. Harris had previous issues with at least one person in the group, witnesses said.

Dees and Harris turned onto 24th Street and parked, armed themselves with pistols, walked toward the group and began firing.

At least two of the three teens were also armed with guns, and they fired back at Harris and Dees. Dees was struck and killed during the exchange.

Investigators said they believe Harris was the primary instigator of the confrontation that led to Dees’ death. The three counts of attempted murder Harris faces are related to the three people he was firing at.

The two other teens, both 16, who were armed are being charged with being persons forbidden to possess a pistol and were placed in juvenile detention.

Harris is charged as an adult and will be held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail pending $230,000 in bonds.
