body found on alabama highway 69 south near shelton state

UPDATE DEC. 3, 2018:

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit confirmed Monday that the man found dead near the intersection of Mae Hinton Drive and Alabama Highway 69 South is John Malcolm Ellis.

UPDATE: 1:25 p.m.: The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office say a man found dead by Alabama Department of Transportation workers on Alabama Highway 69 South this morning is likely an elderly man missing since Oct. 15.

The workers contacted the sheriff’s department after they found the remains while cutting the right of way and spraying for weeds near the intersection of Mae Hinton Drive and Highway 69 South.

Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes investigators recovered the remains from a hole in a ditch near the road. That hole was hidden from view because of tall grass and weeds, sheriff’s officials said.

Capt. Gary Hood with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit said the man’s identity won’t be confirmed before an autopsy takes place, but based on his clothing and age, he’s believed to be 80-year-old John Malcolm Ellis.

Ellis was reported missing from his home on Oct. 15.
