GREENE COUNTY’S FIRST BLACK SHERIFF HAS DIED

Rev. Thomas Gilmore, Greene County’s  first black sheriff, has died.

Gilmore passed away Sunday in Birmingham.

He ran an unsuccessful bid for Greene County Sheriff in 1966.

In 1971, he was elected to the post and served 12 years.

Gilmore was also a pastor in Ensley and a leading figure in the civil rights movement.
