Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby is retiring after 36 years in office, leaving his seat in Congress up for grabs in a primary election coming up fast on Tuesday, May 24.

Latest polls shows Republican Katie Britt leading, with Mo Brooks and Mike Durant trailing behind.

Will Boyd, Brandaun Dean and Lanny Jackson are running for the Democratic Party primary, while Richard Bowers and Jarmal Jabbar Sanders are running as independents, according to Ballotpedia.

University of Alabama Professor of Political Science Richard Fording said the close race has drawn a lot of eyes across the state.

He said flipping a Senate seat, as Doug Jones did in Alabama in December 2017 and as Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff did in Georgia in January 2021, “can tip the balance of power and make a huge difference.”
