ALABAMA VFW OFFICIAL ARRESTED ON THEFT CHARGE
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – An Alabama leader of a national veterans group has been arrested on a charge of embezzling from the organization.
Court records show 45-year-old Johnny Lee Waller of Wetumpka is charged with theft after authorities said he took more than $2,500 from the Alabama Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Waller said he is innocent.
The state VFW referred questions to the national office, where spokeswoman Randi Law says Waller resigned on April 1 as state adjutant. The state website says Waller had been the state commander since 2014.
Law says an investigation into the finances of a local VFW chapter led to the state office in Montgomery.
Court documents show the charge was filed against Waller on April 12. He is free on $30,000 bond.
