Alabama university president to skeptics: ‘Meet me halfway’

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) – The new president of the University of South Alabama says he hopes to build relationships and learn from those already in the school community.

Jo Boner addressed a trustees meeting after his formal acceptance on Thursday. Some have questioned Bonner’s limited academic background, and he acknowledged that there are some on the faculty who’ve raised concerns.

But he says he hopes those people will meet him halfway and give him a chance. Trustees selected Bonner for the job last month.

A board leader says Bonner’s pay will be comparable to that of predecessor Tony Waldrop, whose salary was about $520,000 when he retired earlier this year.
