Just three days after being cleared to play by the NCAA, Abby Doerr made an impact for Alabama’s softball team. With the Crimson Tide even with Liberty at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning, the catcher from Oregon blasted a two-run home run to give Alabama the lead. The Crimson Tide never looked back, going on to win its first game of the Clearwater Elite Invitational 7-1.

The victory was just what the Crimson Tide needed to shake off a disappointing showing last weekend at the Joanne Graf Classic in Tallahassee, Florida. After coming into the season as the No. 1 ranked team, Alabama fell in three consecutive games last weekend, losing twice after holding commanding leads going into the last few innings.

But on Friday morning against Liberty, the Crimson Tide’s sizeable advantage was not overcome. Krystal Goodman started and finished the game for Alabama on the mound, allowing just seven hits in seven innings of work while striking out four batters. Kaylee Tow, Bailey Hemphill, Jenna Johnson and Savannah Woodard each contributed with an RBI. Skylar Wallace had two hits, including a triple.

Alabama will retake the field against top-ranked Washington at 3 p.m. CT on Thursday afternoon.
