Alabama rowing coach Glenn Putyrae was named the 2019 Big 12 Coach of the Year on Wednesday for his successful first season with the Crimson Tide.

Putyrae was named Alabama’s head coach last offseason, taking over in Tuscaloosa after coaching stints at Gonzaga and Georgetown. During his time with the Bulldogs, Putyrae won WCC Coach of the Year honors nine times.

This is the first time that Alabama has received this honor since joining the conference as an affiliate member in 2015.

“I am humbled to be recognized by the coaches of this conference for the team’s success this season,” Putyrae said in a press release. “I am fortunate to have a talented staff, supportive administration and team of committed athletes.”

Alabama recorded a historic season in Putyrae’s first year at the helm. The Crimson Tide swept a top-20 team, landed in the top-20 of the US Rowing/CRCA’s Poll and finished second at Conference Championships, which were all firsts for the program. Alabama also racked up three-consecutive Big 12 Boat of the Week honors, good for the longest streak in the history of the conference, tying Texas’ streak in 2017.
