Alabama Public Radio is putting the “pub” back in public radio this weekend with the help of the West Queens Business District.

The scavenger hunt event is happening from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday within the newly formed business district encompassing the area between downtown Tuscaloosa and the Strip.

“This year, we’re moving our pub event to help celebrate the soft launch of the West Queens Business District,” said WUAL Friends Pub Event CHair Kelly Horwitz in a statement. “And we’ve added a scavenger hunt element so that attendees can become familiar with the many great supporting businesses in this district.”

While the scavenger hunt begins at Innisfree Irish Pub or Alcove International Tavern, hunters will find their targets all over the new district at businesses like Ernest & Hadley Booksellers, Kyle Fine Stationery and Loosa Brews.

“The idea to form a specific district for the area between Downtown and the Strip came from our bookstore staff,” said Ernest & Hadley Booksellers owner Easty Lambert-Brown. “People would come into the store and say that they didn’t know all of these businesses were here. We got tired of hearing that, so we did something about it.”

Those attending the event will first visit Innisfree or Alcove, where they’ll pick up their credentials as well as their scavenger hunt list and map. After hunters visit and snag signatures from businesses, they’ll receive an event T-shirt and a pint glass, in addition to special deals from participating businesses.

All proceeds from the event go toward supporting Alabama Public Radio.
