MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Montgomery City-County Public Library System has joined a program aimed at getting parents to read often to their preschool children.

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten website says this can help parents and children to bond as well as improving literacy.

WSFA-TV reports that coordinator Andrew Foster says it’s “absolutely doable.”

He notes that reading a story every night would add up to 1,000 books in less than three years.

Lots of kids like to hear favorite stories over and over. The website notes that it’s fine to read books more than once, and each time counts toward the total.

Many libraries in West Alabama are also participating. Find yours right here.
