Alabama escapes brunt of winter weather threat

Cold Weather

HUNTSVILLE, Ala (AP) – Frigid temperatures and minor icing are being were reported in north Alabama, but the region avoided widespread problems from a second round of wintry precipitation in a week.

About two dozen school systems canceled classes or switched to online learning and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center ordered thousands of workers to telecommute for the day on Friday.

But traffic was mostly normal in the Tennessee Valley with only scattered accidents reported. Forecasters say temperatures fell to around 20 degrees in the region and winds made it feel like it was in the low teens.
