After strong performances at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational last Friday, two Alabama cross country runners were awarded conference honors.

Alabama graduate student Vincent Kiprop earned Men’s Runner of the Week and freshman Allison Wilson was named Women’s Freshman Runner of the Week, the Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday afternoon. The honors mark the second time in both Kiprop’s and Wilson’s career that they are weekly conference recipients.

Kiprop earned the award after finishing first overall with a time of 23:09.88 in the men’s Blue Division 5 Mile after pulling away from his teammate graduate student Gilbert Kigen by nearly four seconds.

Last season, Kiprop sat out due to injury, but he returned, achieving a new school-best and meet record. He was named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week being the first athlete from Alabama since 2015 to earn the honor during the cross country season.

Wilson was named SEC Freshman of the week following her 69th place finish at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. Wilson posted the best time among all SEC freshmen, finishing at 17:17.52.

Wilson led Alabama to a first-place finish at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic on Aug. 31, where she finished first for the Crimson Tide and placed fourth overall with a time of 17:52.68 in the 5k.

The Alabama cross country teams will next compete Saturday, Oct. 19, when the women head to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-National Invitational and the men head to Princeton, N.J., for the Princeton Invitational.
