Tuscaloosa- What was once a dark secret many endured in silent shame is in the news more and more.
October is domestic violence awareness month and the victims and survivors of abusive relationships are being asked to share their stories to help victims who are too afraid to report or escape from their abuser.
Signs of an abusive relationship can include things like jealousy, controlling behavior and threatening behavior. Destroying your property and using physical force are other signs of being in an abusive relationship.
Dr. Tricia Witte, Associate Professor of human development and family studies, says that no threat should be ignored.
“You need to take all threats seriously. So if you’re in a relationship that’s violent and your boyfriend or girlfriend threatens your life and they done it before but you didn’t act on it you still need to take every single threat seriously.”
If you or someone you know is trapped in an abusive relationship call the national domestic hotline.
