600 BACKPACKS GIVEN AWAY IN PARRISH
Hundreds lined up in Parrish this morning in hopes of getting a brand-new backpack free of charge.
The Capstone Rural Health Center in Parrish hosted their third annual Back 2 School Supplies Giveaway. This year, they had 600 backpacks on-hand, up from 500 last year. More than 1,500 people showed up to the event last year.
Donations came from the Salvation Army of Walker County and First United Methodist Church. Shannon Williamson with Capstone Services said it’s been able to serve more children this year thanks to the help.
“We see insured and uninsured people, and so in saying that we have a big need in our community to reach out and help parents,” she said. “This is a stressful time for a lot of people, and we wanted to be able to give back to them.”
Each backpack contained discount coupons from area merchants, and each child was also entered into a drawing to win a Dell laptop.
