2 RESCUED AFTER FALLING INTO DOWNTOWN BIRMINGHAM TRENCH

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Authorities say two construction workers have been rescued after falling into a ditch in downtown Birmingham.

Birmingham Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Matt Russell tells Al.com two men were working in a trench and the crew needed to move a protective plate. Russell says the plate shifted and hit the workers.

Emergency officials lifted the men out of the ditch and footage from local television stations showed them being loaded onto stretchers and taken to nearby ambulances.

Russell said both men were conscious and alert when they were pulled out of the trench. Details on their injuries weren’t immediately available. Russell says investigators believe the crew followed safety protocols and had the necessary safety mechanisms in place..
