One man is in the hospital after a serious accident in Tuscaloosa Wednesday morning.

Authorities said a wrecker driver was on Buttermilk Road in Tuscaloosa when he fell asleep at the wheel. His vehicle went down an embankment and onto I-20/59 Westbound where it was struck by an 18-wheeler, authorities said.

“They just called me at 5:30 a.m. but I was asleep and didn’t answer the phone,” said Austin Hill, a relative of the victim. “I woke up about 7 a.m. and found somebody had called and this happened.”

The driver was air-lifted and taken to UAB Hospital. The condition of the driver of the 18-wheeler is unknown.

In 2015, Alabama State Troopers responded to 526 traffic fatalities. Drivers are encouraged to follow all rules of the roadways to keep them and those around them safe.
