Sumter County Sheriff Removed From Office

The Alabama Supreme Court has ordered Sumter County Sheriff Tyrone Clark to be removed from office for corruption and neglect of duty.

The decision was unanimous Wednesday after more than two days of testimony in the impeachment trial.

State prosecutors had accused Clark of allowing an inmate to leave the jail and return with contraband without being searched when he returned. A former deputy testified that the inmate had the passcode to the jail surveillance system.

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange said that public corruption is a top priority of the Attorney General’s Office and he praised his office and others that were involved in the proceedings.

Clark does not face any criminal charges at this time.
